WEUSI (way-oo-see) Underground Railroad Care Facility
The Architectural Group was tasked by the WEUSI Underground Railroad care facility to develop a village-style care facility campus in Dayton Ohio. In its design, the campus needed to give patients a sense of autonomy, while still allowing staff and community to aid in their recovery as the transition from the central shared house to their own personal dwelling.
On the historic site of Jacob Hiram Welty Mumma’s home, small but comfortable homes create a village of residents with a matching community center to increase the services that WEUSI can provide to the residents. The individual houses will give patients the opportunity to develop their independence. The new community center will provide a headquarters for administration, visitation, check-ups, and community gathering spaces. These will all be knitted together with well lit park-like paths for accessibility and recreation to give the village a true feeling of community.
